Blue Dream (RareNoise Records) Gold Mine, the Music Collectors Magazine 09/04/2018

“Saft has found that sweet spot between brilliant craziness and sweetly refined jazz. (Musicology must be his minor as he’s picked such discreet nuggets to interpret.) It all amounts to a thrill-ride of carnivalesque proportions, RareNoise, indeed.”

Interviews

15 Questions interviewed Jamie Saft, Letting the Music Happen 09/02/2018, excerpt below. Jamie talks about recording, the creative process, and collaboration.

15 Qs:  Could you describe your creative process on the basis of a piece or album that’s particularly dear to you, please? Where did the ideas come from, how were they transformed in your mind, what did you start with and how do you refine these beginnings into the finished work of art?

Jamie Saft: An album I am particularly proud of is “Strength & Power” (RareNoise Records), a collaboration with Trombone master Roswell Rudd….No ego, no agenda, no preconceived notions of what we should be doing. Just trust, mutual respect, and respect for improvisation. I am particularly proud of this album as the final document of Roswell Rudd playing purely “free.”

Recent press on Blue Dream by The Jamie Saft Quartet, out now on RareNoise.

JazzTrail

Impressively executed with great feeling, Blue Dream makes you plunge into aurally transparent sonic waters that open your soul, clear your mind, and more than satisfy your ears.

Downbeat Editors Pick

The rigorous pursuit of musical virtue can lead to any number of places within jazz’s ever-expanding borders. And keyboardist Jamie Saft embodies that notion, refusing to turn out a succession of recordings that might be thought to placate a single, certain type of listener.
